Somewhere along the line, I picked up some drawing skills. Plus I love Japanese manga and graphic novels and literature. In the 1990s I began to draw a lot, describing bits and pieces of my life growing up in Japan and my observations upon returning to Tokyo as a journalist. With the purchase of a new scanner made by Canon, I’m now able to make some of these drawings (plus the many documents I’ve obtained under the Freedom of Information Act) available to my readers. Please enjoy!

This is from a 1996 drawing journal during the year I was working in Tokyo as a journalist. It was wonderful being back in my old haunts in the western suburb of Mitaka, which means “three hawks” and refers to an old hunting ground once used by the Japanese royal family.
